Assata Olugbala Shakur was convicted of 1st degree murder in 1977 after being involved in a police shootout on the New Jersey Turnpike. It was 1973. The state trooper, Werner Foerster, was left dead.  She escaped from prison in 1979 and fled to Cuba, where she was granted political asylum and still currently lives.
