Gallery: Classic! Comedian Flip Wilson's 10 Greatest Bits: "The Devil Made Me Do It!"
A trailblazer in comedy, Flip Wilson was one of America's most popular entertainers in the first half of the 1970s.
You might know his catchphrase "The Devil made me do it!" His alter ego Geraldine Jones was a huge part of The Flip Wilson Show, but in spite of the shenanigans on the surface, Wilson deserves mad respect for breaking racial barriers (along with those who arrived on the scene before him, such as Sammy Davis Jr.).
Even if he did have to give in to some of the stereotypes (many of his jokes are very un-PC now!) In 1972, TIME magazine featured Wilson on the cover, declaring him "TV's first Black superstar." The Flip Wilson Show was the very first successful variety show hosted by a Black entertainer, and Wilson won a Golden Globe, two Emmy Awards, and a Grammy. Above all, he was funny! Check out these 10 classic bits.
