This story comes to us from a city outside of Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina.

The city of Pilar lies 60km (37 miles) outside of Buenos Aires and boasts a population of just under 300,000.

The city is known as the National Capital of Polo. Amongst its tourism attractions is the Nuestra Señora del Pilar, pictured above.

Now, however, the city of Pilar is attracting attention for a different reason altogether, and it has to do with 8 cops, 1 police warehouse, and a half-ton of missing

marijuana.

According to The Guardian, Commissioner Emilio Portero prompted an inspection of a police warehouse for impounded drugs in Pilar.

The marijuana had been in storage for two years, but here's

the kicker: of the 6,000kg that had been registered, only 5,460kg were found.

So, what happened to the missing 540kg (1,191 lbs) of weed?

Former city police commissioner Javier Specia — Portero's predecessor — and three of his subordinates were called before a judge, where they all offered the same explanation.

The missing drugs

had all been eaten by mice.

That's right: mice.

Forensic experts, however, were quick to counter the plausibility of the claim.

As the BBC reports, "Forensic experts doubted mice would see the drugs as food, and would have probably died if they had eaten it."

The eight officers involved in the claim were fired on Tuesday and are ordered to testify before a judge on May 4, according to USA Today.

The judge will determine if the marijuana went missing as the result of "expedience or negligence."
