Is your dog smart?

Of course it is. Dogs are undeniably one of the smartest species of animals; they're right up there with chimpanzees, elephants, and dolphins. But some pups are smarter than others, according to psychologist Stanley Coren. 

Coren wrote "The Intelligence of Dogs" back in the '90s and found out that certain breeds excel in specific things. He featured the results of a survey conducted of 199 dog-obedience judges. Safe to say, the results were pretty much consistent, but it has to be noted that many judges said that there are exceptions in every breed. A lot of it just comes down to training. That means that dog owners need to put in work in order to hone a dog's inherent intelligence.

According to Coren, there's a thing called "working intelligence", which is a metric for pup smarts. It encapsulates two main qualities: a dog's level of obedience, and the time it takes for a dog to learn new commands.
