Know where you stand. Having a secure relationship with your partner's child is extremely important and allows the child to know they are loved and cared for. By not making the whole situation about you and your insecurities, you

will flourish in your new role and will be the best Step Mom ever. 

We all know communication is the key to any healthy relationship. It is doubly important when a situation relies on the communication for a child's wellbeing and happiness. Treat your

ex like you would want to be treated.  

One of the worst mistakes that new Step Moms make is they think the child needs a new mother. They impose their own set of standards and morals on the child. Learn to

go with the existing parental flow and remember - there is room in the family for everyone. 

Have the best intentions going into the meeting. You don't want it to be a wild west style standoff. Don't try too hard and remember this is a marathon not

a sprint. If you really love your new partner, take the time, be yourself and the rest will sort itself out. 

Christina and her step-mom, Anne give us this fantastic example of a Step-Mom "stepping up" to the plate. 

"I never expected to call anyone my step-mom. To have a step-mom

means your dad got divorced and he remarried or his wife died. In my case, it was the latter. My mom died when I was nineteen, meaning that my dad

would likely remarry at some point. About two years after my mom's death he met a woman who would become my step-mom. Two years may sound like a long time,

but in "grief time" it might as well have been two months. Is anybody truly ever ready to accept the person who might try to replace her mom?"
