Gallery: Sad! Donald Trump Doesn't Understand Why The Civil War Happened
Make sure to send your grade school history teacher an edible arrangement today: During an interview with the Washington Examiner's Salena Zito Monday, President Donald Trump wondered why the U.S. had a civil war and suggested President Andrew Jackson — a slave owner who died 16 years before the war began — could have prevented it.
"I mean had Andrew Jackson been a little bit later you wouldn't have had the Civil War. He was a very tough person, but he had a big heart," said Trump, who's often compared his own campaign to that of the country's seventh president.
"He was really angry that he saw what was happening with regard to the Civil War, he said, 'There's no reason for this,' " Trump added.
Trump also questioned why the Civil War even happened in the first place, as The Hill reported.
"People don't realize, you know, the Civil War, if you think about it, why?" Trump asked. "People don't ask that question, but why was there the Civil War? Why could that one not have been worked out?"
Maybe he should ask Frederick Douglass, somebody who’s done an amazing job and is getting recognized more and more.
