Gallery: Hipster Barbie's Instagram Game Is SOOO On Point!
Barbie traded in her pink flip phone for the iPhone 7. Now, she has over 1 million followers on Instagram and is #livingauthentic with shots of her latte art, handsome hipster boyfriend, and Kinfolk magazine.
The anonymous woman behind this account is a Portland-based photographer that likes to poke fun at Instagram trends. Although everyone was hash-tagging their photos with #liveauthentic, they were all posting the same exact things with the same exact aesthetic.
“People were all taking the same pictures in the same places and using the same captions,” SocalityBarbie told WIRED. “I couldn’t tell any of their pictures apart so I thought, ‘What better way to make my point than with a mass-produced doll?'”
While SocalityBarbie's Instagram is ridiculously relatable, the account creator encourages users to create their own aesthetics and feeds, instead of replicating what's trending.
“I get it, it’s pretty to look at,” she says. “But it’s so dishonest. Nobody actually lives like this. And it’s so overdone that it’s becoming boring.”
