The black family is filled to the brim with topics that are just simply off limits. Much of this was just due to survival. Everything we did was about surviving in a world that outlawed our very presence.

 So, just as we literally had to be tight-lipped to save our own a**es, we kept a lot of other things on hush-mode as well. If sh*t hit the fan, you would just sweep it under a rug, and continue to go about your business.

Being gay or a lesbian used to be a massive taboo, but it’s one that Blacks have become more approving of. Unlike homosexuality, a lot of things still irk the elders and tap dance all on their last nerves. For example, you couldn’t let someone in the hood catch you kee-keeing it up with the cops. If that got back to anyone, your a** was as good as grass.

Or better yet, you couldn’t even fix your lips to discredit Jesus for your meal instead of thanking him. You may get a back handed slap out of nowhere. But the coldest and most painful reaction to your inability to be blindly loyal to the idea of white Jesus or any other taboo was to be shunned and curbed.

 We want to advance and heal, so let’s lay all our sh*t on the table and talk it up until we get some solutions brewing. With that being said, here are the top 10 taboos in the black family and community.
