Interracial dating has become a lot more accepted than what it used to be, but that still doesn’t exempt your fam from turning their nose up at you if you

decide to bring home a Becky or a Tim.

You’ll hear everything from, “I didn’t know you was down with the swirl?” to “Your mama know about this?” Uh, yes!!!

It’s one thing if you decide to switch up your religious preferences from what your parents raised you as, like going from baptist to muslim. But it’s a whole other

issue when you completely denounce the idea of God.

To protest God is blasphemy in a black household and a sure way to your metaphorical hanging. 

If you’ve been dealing with some heavy stuff (and we all have been through it), that still doesn’t give you a pass to go talk to a therapist about your

problems.

You ever recommend to your cuz who has trouble managing, what sounds like depression, to get counseling? She’ll whip her neck around so fast and be quick to inform

you that she is not and will never be the definition of crazy.

You ever witness your great aunt try to justify one of your cousins being in an unhappy relationship with the, “You need a man,” belief?

It’s pretty sickening, the push

black women get from the older generation to get married and start a family. They have no idea why on earth a woman would be comfortable being single and childless.

Who’da thunk?

Opt for this type of lifestyle and you’ve surely affirmed that you will be the talk of the fam and even rumored to be a lesbian for years

to come.

Being musty is a huge no-no in the black family and a sure way to get your snapped on. Don’t do it to yourself just because you were too lazy

to hop in the shower or even at the very least reach for the deodorant.

It’s not really cute nor worth the roast session you’ll have to endure later on. 

We don’t talk about depression, we don’t talk about trauma, and we damn sure don’t believe in suicide because, “that’s a quick way to the gates of hell.”

But the

reality is that we damn sure need to discuss all of these mental health topics because we are suffering from trauma. We’re going on injured for too long when something

as simple as a conversation could open the doors to mending decades of wounds.

All black family taboos are incredibly frustrating but the way we deal with uncles, aunts, and cousins who can’t seem to keep their hands to themselves is beyond disturbing. We’re

doing nothing but piling on to already-existent strain and hurt.

When we remain silent, we feed our wounds rather than try to alleviate them.

Don’t you dare talk to your neighbor about what’s been going on at the house as that’ll get you straight up exiled.

If you were that kid who went around

spreading your mama’s business, you were next in line for the booty whooping of a lifetime.

If the hood hears about you working with the pigs for whatever reason (they won’t even care about the reason), you might as well pack your things up and hit

the road.

For every person who infiltrated a Black Panther chapter or got in good with the Nation of Islam for the sole purpose of taking information back to the

feds, was a snitch, a traitor, and the lowest of the low.

Our history with law enforcement strictly forbids this type of collaboration, so don’t get it twisted when you

get a big EFF you from the hood because of perceived rat-like tendencies.

What’s understood doesn’t need to be said. That is an old and wise Black colloquialism that applies so much to everything, but specifically in regard to how you make your

bread.

We don’t ask, and you don’t say a thing, because the facts are that it’s no one’s business but your own.
