We all sat there in elementary school as our teachers bent carefully at the hip or languished long arms up to roll down maps to teach us the capital cities of all 50 states in the Union. It was a Union we fought to keep intact, someone in corduroy with chalk-covered hands would tell you, and so it was important to know where the politicos met to shake hands, make deals, and continue our democracy.
