Quiz: Isn't It Ironic? This Quiz Will Test If You Know More About Irony Than Alanis Morissette!
We're going to start with two absolute facts.
First, these are the major definitions of irony, according to The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language:
i. The use of words to express something different from and often opposite to their literal meaning.
ii. An expression or utterance marked by a deliberate contrast between apparent and intended meaning.
iii. A literary style employing such contrasts for humorous or rhetorical effect.
Don't worry, we don't understand any of that mumbo jumbo either. But here's fact number two, and it's something you need to come to terms with: not a single line of Alanis Morissette's hit single 'Ironic' is actually ironic.
This is something of a long running joke in snobby literary circles. A quick Google search will reveal dozens of essays written in professional magazines debating this issue, but most everyone agrees that the singer has no idea WTF she's talking about.
But the question is, do you? Do you know irony when you see it? These next 30 questions are designed to test your skills and determine if you are, ironically(?), better at identifying irony than a woman who made millions off the term.
(In case you were wondering, the picture above is from the music video for 'Ironic', which looks like it took roughly half an hour to film and cost $37)
OK -- here's how this is going to work. We'll give you a phrase, and you simply decide if it's ironic or not ironic. Easy, right?
